A Playground For The Adventurous Ones
Have you visited the Coastal PlayGrove? It is located at the former Big Splash site along East Coast Park. Hence it is also fondly known as the Big Splash Playground!
It is more thrilling than most other outdoor playgrounds in Singapore. The 4-storey vertical climbing net is currently the tallest outdoor play feature in Singapore; the climbing features located alongside the vertical nets are challenging.

Hence, I conclude that climbing up this high-element challenge is a potentially hair-raising experience for your preschoolers. The older primary school going kids will more likely have a whale of a time there. I brought my dare-devil 5-year-old twins to the playground twice.
The first time, they were accompanied by the older siblings. With the big kids accompanying them and boosting their confidence, climbing up was a breeze. They skipped and hopped through each level and never once showed signs of fear.
Our second experience without their elder siblings accompanying them was entirely different. They were fearful, and they shrank away from the net. Many of the features seemed difficult to them. So if your preschoolers do not like the elements there, it is perfectly normal.
But don’t be disappointed. The little ones have not been forgotten. There are also other more accessible features installed just for them. Scroll down for more details.
Coastal Playgrove
The 4.5ha Coastal Playgrove is located at Area B of East Coast Park. While the key features are located inside the former Big Splash site, there are other features such as the nature play garden, water play area and the smaller scale climbing net for the smaller kids to explore.
Play Tower
Play Tower houses the vertical net play called the Vertical Challenge.
While the net is 4-storey high, climbers can exit at each level and explore the other play features such as stepping pods, hammocks, grip wall, and disc swings installed.
If you worry about safety, fret not. The climbing net is tightly knitted. Therefore, it is tough to slip and fall a few levels down. In fact, as an adult, I find it hard to wiggle through the net.
The climbing features on each level have varying difficulties and are primarily suitable for older kids.
Coach Suz will probably be interested in trying out the climbing boards in the photo below and grading the difficulty level. I cannot even get myself up the board.

Thrilling Slides
You can find two outdoor tunnel slides on the third and fourth floor, 7.3m and 11.9m long. We tried, and it was exhilarating. The views on the upper floors are fantastic too! You get a panoramic view of East Coast Park on top of the playground!
There are lots of warnings on the usage of the slides. Parents probably need to be mindful and assess whether their kids are suitable to ride on them and remind them to cross their arms across their chests. This will avoid abrasion from sliding down. I believe the metal slides will get rather hot in the mid-day too.
Climbing For The Little Ones in Coastal Playgrove
The little ones are not forgotten. Check out the climbing net below.
Water Play Area
There is a wading pool for the little ones to luxuriate in, accompanied by water jets to splash the heat away. The toilet is conveniently located behind Burger King, which is on the first floor of Coastal Playgrove. Great for cleaning up after a round of messy play.
Nature Playgarden
Adjacent to the Play Tower is the Nature Playgarden, where kids get to explore nature. Check out the bees and butterflies waggling above the flowers. We found lots of mushrooms in various colours too. However, I am unfamiliar with wild mushrooms, so I prohibited the kids from touching any of them.
There is a ton of dining options in the Coastal Playgrove. Other than Burger King, you can find Picotin Express, Kimchi Box, Old Town White Coffee, and Crab in da Bag.
Location of Coastal Playgrove
Want to find the playground in East Coast Park? If you remember Big Splash, it is the same spot.
902 East Coast Park Service Rd, Singapore 449874.
There are parking lots right beside Coastal Playgrove. But East Coast Park gets rather crowded on the weekends. So finding a nearby space for your car may be tricky.
If you wish to take a bus, the only option is bus service 401, a loop service from Bedok Interchange. It only operates on public holidays and weekends but is currently suspended on the blog post date. Click here for the bus route and further updates from Transit Link.
Bring Along
Remember to bring your insect repellant and water bottles for lots of hydration! Wear covered shoes for the climb too!
