A semi-annual ritual for me – to create Chinese flashcards for my kids who are currently in primary school. The words are taken out from their Chinese textbooks – 快乐伙伴.
Rather than focusing on textbooks, I choose to use flashcards because, in this way, we can quickly identify words that they are not familiar with. We sort the unfamiliar words into a stack and simply focus on them.
I find this method of learning time-saving and less confusing. It works well for kids who are very weak in their Chinese Language. One of my children can be exempted from learning Chinese, but we choose to let him continue with the Chinese classes and examinations. However, we do not hold expectations of any sort. So using flashcards removes the unnecessary frills that the child does not need to know, and we zoom straight into what he can manage.
If your child can easily pass their Chinese exam, the flashcards may not be as useful for him/her.
How We Use The Chinese Flashcards:
The Chinese flashcards come without hanyu pinyin. This forces the child to recall the words on his own and, if necessary, to refer to the textbook or dictionary for the correct pronunciation.
After reading out loud the word, we try to recall its meaning. An explanation in English works too. Next, we attempt to construct a sentence with the word.
My purpose here is to make learning as easy for my child as possible due to his learning difficulty. Hence, I do not force him to write down the words as the process puts him off. A reluctant learner learns nothing.
A child with a higher ability may form a sentence and write the words down. It will certainly help with his composition writing.
The flashcards are printed in black and red. According to his textbook syllabus, the student must be able to write the words in red and read the words in black. Hence, we tailor his Chinese spelling revision according to the red cards.
