Get Curious at the National Museum 2020 – My Tweens Love the Hunt

If you have tweens like me, you probably know museum trips are usually not their top favourites. They will probably scream “Boring!”.

The National Museum has cleverly organized a gallery hunt to keep visitors engaged. It is probably not the first time they are doing it, but it is my first time joining one with the kids.

Well, they are successful with this strategy. My tweens definitely enjoyed the hunt.

If you are keen too, go to this microsite. There are a couple of pages with different games to try out. Swipe to the Get Curious page for a game of tic-tac-toe.

There are 9 items to locate all over the gallery. Scan the QR codes near the physical items to “collect” them.

You can get to collect a Doraemon Singapore-themed 3D miniature magnet collectible if you complete a line of tic-tac-toe. We found all 9 items and yet we get only one magnet, which in the kids’ opinion, were pretty lame stuffs.

Never mind the collectibles, it was a fun process for them. And in fact, it wasn’t an easy feat. Our daddy joined in the hunt as well, and the kids certainly fared better than him.

No spoilers for the hunt. The items are located inside various galleries, save for the Glass Rotunda.

Museum for Preschoolers?

My 4 kids (when young) never like dark galleries, especially when it is about dark times such as war. Dark scenes with sounds of bombers flying over did not go well with them.

The 2 elder ones are in primary school now. They are acquainted with Singapore history through Social Studies and they find the exhibits of the past a lot more interesting than they previously did.

My ten-year-old can now explore many of the exhibits on his own, and taking time to read the accompanying descriptions displayed at the side.

Whereas the 3-year-olds dragged me out of every gallery they entered, except for the one that displayed traditional toys. They enjoyed better posing for photos outside the brightly lit corriders.

So don’t be surprised if you find your little ones melting down 5 minutes into your museum tour.

Let’s get curious now!
