Do you itch badly after swimming in the pool? If you do, you are probably allergic to chlorine like us. We surely get chlorine rash after a dip in the pool.
My little ones suffered the worst, and initially, I thought it was possibly a food allergy or heat rash. When I started to find the correlation between our swim and the rashes that appeared immediately on the same night, it then dawned upon me that those itchy dots on their skin were chlorine rash.
It was the most uncomfortable for my Twin 1, who suffered countless sleepless nights from her itching torso and limbs. She scratched till her skin bled, and I had to stop her from entering the pool periodically.
Comes Covid-19, we all stopped swimming, and I forgot all about the chlorine rash. T1’s rashes went away too. Now that we have gone into Phase 2 of Circuit Breaker, we dived right back into the pool, and only to be confronted with itching nights again.
Our pool maintenance company insisted that the chlorine level is just right, and in compliance with the regulatory requirement. In fact, some regular swimmers recommend a higher dosage of chlorine for clearer water.
My kids love to relax in the pool on a hot day or after a hard day’s work. Instead of going to the dermatologist to get corticosteroid creams to reduce inflammation, I thought we should do something to prevent the rash instead.
Our Chlorine Rash Remedy that Works
It is really simple!
Before entering the pool, apply a generous layer of barrier cream over the areas that react most to the chlorinated water before entering the pool.
Shower immediately after the swim.
Add Vitamin C powder* into your shower gel and facial wash to scrub all over your body. Vitamin C neutralises chlorine. It works for us.
If you like, you can also add on some lemon essential oil (blended with a carrier oil) to apply all over your body after your shower to neutralise any residual chlorine on your skin.
That’s all! It is so simple!

Thanks for sharing your tips, I shall look into the Vit C powder 😄 Coincidentally, also after Phase 2 re-opening, my girl had rashes after swimming and we also used the barrier method! I applied The Ordinary’s 100% Plant-derived Squalane. It’s a very lightweight oil that is absorbed immediately and the smell of Chlorine on her is much less once we exit the pool to shower and change.
Hi Sharon, happy to hear that the barrier cream works well on your family too. My face was itching badly after a swim just a few days ago. Didn’t apply barrier cream. So I mixed the Vit C powder into my facial wash, and the itch toned down significantly. Hope it will be effective for you guys too.
