Are you having cravings for durians? We were. Did we join the long queues for good durians from our regular durian supplier? No, we didn’t.
Come on; it is only Phase 2 of reopening. We should still avoid crowds whenever we can. So we were happy to have our quality durians delivered right to our doorstep. Each package was heat-sealed, chilled and contained at least 450g of durian.
8 Durian
We are thankful to 8 Durian for partially sponsoring our durian treat. All we needed to do was to sit down and savour the treat.
8 Durian specialises in Mao Shan Wang from Pahang High Mountain Plantation. They serve only 3 types of Mao Shan Wang Durian, namely AAA Grade, Black Gold and Musang Kang.
Musang King Premium Mao Shan Wang ‘A Grade’
We started our durian feast from the lowest grade (A-grade) to the highest grade (AAA-grade). However, we were disappointed by the A-Grade Mao Shan Wang that did not meet our expectation for the price tag it carries.
At $21 per kg (including the husk), each box cost almost $38. The flesh was a firm, fibrous and tasted mildly sweet. We were expecting something more aromatic than this.
Thankfully, the rest of the treats were heavenly delightful.
Premium Mao Shan Wang ‘AAA Grade’
These AAA-Grade golden custards cost $23.50 per kg. We bought 2 of this grade, and both were bittersweet. The seeds were inconsistently big and small. Its soft creamy texture was pretty similar to the Black Gold while its smell and taste were not as overpowering. My kids like the AAA-grade ones best.
Premium Black Gold Durian
Well-known as the cream of the crop amongst the Mao Shan Wang durians, 8 Durian is pricing these at $27 per kg.
These fleshy Black Golds were well-hydrated (not watery) and thus creamy and soft. There were more small seeds than big ones. Although it tasted more sweet than bitter, my children found these durians too pungent for their taste bud. Its garlicky and yet sweet aftertaste lingered on my tongue the entire night until I decided to brush my teeth for bed.
How did 8 Durian source their durians?
8 Durian has mentioned on their website that they put in a great deal of effort cultivating their durians. They co-own a plantation in a mountainous part of Pahang and took actions to ensure the following are taken care of.
Firstly, no overcrowding is allowed in the durian plantation with experienced irrigation specialists hired, so that their durian trees will be adequately nourished with nutrients and water. This arrangement has resulted in high-quality durian flesh that is not too dry nor too watery.
Second, they use organic fertilizer to ensure that all their durian trees thrive.
Third, they install sturdy nets below the durian trees so that that their durians do not fall onto the ground. The falling impact may cause the durian husks to crack open. Any tiny opening in the durian husks can cause the durian flesh inside to oxidise more quickly, and hence a deterioration in quality. Durians dropped onto the ground are never sold.
And last, they even hire qualified durian chopping specialists to ensure that the durian husks are chopped at the right spot to slow down oxidization.
With the above arrangements, it is no wonder their durians have priced a premium over the rest. 8 Durian even guarantees replacements for watery durians!
