My friends asked how I am protecting my four kids from the COVID-19. So I thought I might as well share our hygiene practices at home and how we boost immunity in the blog.
Bearing in mind that my kids are young (aged 10, 9, 3, 3), it is hard to get them to abide by all the hygiene rules we have established for them.
We try our best to get them to refrain from rubbing their eyes, picking their noses and biting their fingernails. It is tough. And it seems like coughing and sneezing into other people’s faces is a socially acceptable habit to retain. And, they love to compete for pressing the lift buttons.
Nonetheless, we keep them at home whenever they feel unwell to avoid their mucus and saliva dripping all over the playground when they cough and sneeze. We are thankful for the Jungle Gym Swing, which we recently installed. It has kept everyone in the house sane (including myself).
If we happen to run out of the house for a session of play, or whenever the elder ones return from school, they understand that when they return, the immediate task is to wash their hands, elbow and leg with soap. In fact, we require the elder ones to shower immediately.
The floor near the main door is also mopped daily with an anti-bacterial floor detergent*. We never know what our shoes have stepped on. We do not leave our shoes outside the house.
Hubby has also wisely reminded me that we should clean our mobile phone with some disinfecting wipes. This is especially so for him, who leaves the house for work. We hold on to the mobile phone like some precious treasure, leave it on the coffee shop while we eat, hold on to the escalator’s handrail with the phone on the same phone. You get my point. Other than cash, the mobile phone must be the dirtiest personal item that one possesses.
Our measures are not failproof, especially when the young kids have no self-control in maintaining their hygiene nor refrain from touching their face. Thus, we must build their immunity so that their internal defences can counter virus attacks.
Boosting Their Immunity
Honestly, I did not dash out to get any kids’ supplements to boost immunity. We are just relying on whatever we have at home, and I am so thankful that these supplements help with building the defences.
Multi-vitamins
Some of our little and not-so-little terrors at home take minimal vegetables. Thus I had to supplement with multi-vitamins* to ensure that they get a balanced diet. They love GummiKing vitamins tremendously, and for the fact that it is sugar-free, I love it too. (The bottle in the above photo is not sugar-free as the sugar-free one was out of stock when I ordered previously.)
Multi-vitamins are always known for boosting immunity, especially Vitamin C and E, which helps to fight off infection. While Vitamin C is commonly available in fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, we can find the most Vitamin E in wheat germ oil and sunflower seeds.
Probiotics to Boost Immunity
We typically take this to improve our digestive system to counter gastric flu and indigestion, as well as for our brain health. Ever since we realise that probiotics help boost immunity, we started taking our sachets* even more regularly to fend off any potential virus attack.
Note that probiotic is not the same is prebiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria that support gut health whereas prebiotics serves as food for these probiotic.
Turmeric / Curcumin
We meant to take this for anti-inflammatory purposes. But I am happy to know that Curcumin is proven to be anti-viral.
However, there is no point piling up on curries. Turmeric powders used in curries have only about 3% curcumin by weight. And I am not sure how much curries my kids can tolerate.
Anyway, for the kids, they chew on Turmeric Gummy Drops*. Some of them enjoyed the taste while the others ran away immediately upon my offer.
As for the adults, I like the doTERRA Turmeric Dual Chamber Capsules*. Each serving size contains 300mg of curcuminoids. You can check out more on the science behind the capsules here.
