For travellers who prefer an alternative mode of transport (apart from taking a flight) from Tromso to Stockholm, you can commute through the local bus and train. That was what we did.
Even though it is cheaper, it takes around 11 times the travelling time as compared to flying. You can only do this if you are not in a rush and wish to enjoy the scenic view through the train ride. A flight will probably be much faster with just 2 hours.
Our Journey From Tromso to Stockholm
Bus from Tromso to Narvik
Our 4 hours journey with Bus no. 100 started off from the Tromso Prostneset station, which is the interchange below the Tromso Tourist Information Office. Each ticket to Narvik cost NOK 360 (SGD 60 approx), which can be bought directly from the bus driver. The bus travels along from Tromsdalen Bruvegen to Bromsgard, having multiple stops at different regions of Northern Norway. We were very impressed by how punctual the bus was at each bus stop. I downloaded the app Troms Reise and it was really useful.
Buses in Norway have a very high standard and we were seated comfortably all the way. Coupled with the scenic window view, the 4 hours ride felt like only a 2 hours ride.
Train from Narvik to Stockholm Central
We alighted at Bromsgard bus stop and walked against the direction of the traffic. Just walk straight all the way and you will see signs along the way towards Narvik Station, so it’s pretty easy!
After crossing the road, you will see a downward slope towards Narvik Station. Unlike the other train stations, Narvik station is a little more run down and the only available cafe was under renovation. As a result, we could not get any food and was hoping the train would have a nice cafeteria like the one we experienced on NSB. To travel from Narvik to Stockolm, you can book an overnight train from SJ website. The travelling time will be at least 18 hours and 30 minutes. So pack along a book or Netflix if you are afraid you have nothing to do on the train!
We were looking forward to the second overnight train in our trip as we had a fantastic experience with NSB Sove. Unfortunately, the cafe on the train had little options to offer and was not as well-maintained compared to the one on NSB. The sleeping compartment felt a little less clean and the pressure of the water at the hand basin was really weak.
Nonetheless, we had a good night sleep and were ready to tackle the day feeling energized! The train arrived on time, which is also the final stop of the train journey.
Ha det Norway. Fika here we come!
Cheers! S.
