Good things must share.
Hubby brought me across the causeway to Johor Bahru for a one-day getaway to celebrate my big 40. Other than a fantastic spa experience in Spa Manja and shopping, we enjoyed a sumptuous seafood dinner by the seaside.
The food was delicious, and the meal was cheaper than what we would have paid in Singapore. The place was clean, bright and airy since we dined under the open sky.
The waitress didn’t show us any menu. She merely brought us straight to the kitchen to select the seafood on display. The price tag for each item was shown there. We picked a fish, a lobster and two crabs.

Since there were only 2 of us, we only just three seafood dishes and a plate of vegetable.
The lobster weighed 500g and cost about SGD30. The dish is steamed with ginger, onion and salted vegetable, and the lobster meat tastes sweet and refreshing. After wiping out the flesh, we went on to finish up the heavenly broil filled with the lobster essence.
The Sri Lankan crab was so fresh. We saw boats of fishers heading out towards the kelong a couple of time when we ate. The slightly salty and sweet crab flesh was flaky but not dry. It did not stick to the crab shell at all. But compared to the usual Sri Lankan crab we ate, the crab had lesser flesh and a harder shell. I even cut my finger twice when I tried to remove the meat from the shell.
We selected a relatively big white snapper. The waitress recommended to steam the fish with a chilli-based sauce which was unexpectedly spicy. I couldn’t appreciate the fish as the sauce overwhelmed the entire dish. I could only tell that the meat texture was firm and flaky, which is the characteristic of a freshly caught snapper. Customers on the nearby table opted steamed fish; we should have done that too.
We finished off the meal with a local dessert which resembled ice kachang filled with a lot more ingredients such as barley.
