Managing Bronchitis at Home with Essential Oils

My toddlers were diagnosed with bronchitis several times last year. They were below one-year-old then. It was a lot of hassle and money spent. #4 was even hospitalised at three months old for upper respiratory tract infection. See my earlier post on this story.

By the time they were five months old, we had purchased a nebuliser at the doctor’s advice to save us time and money visiting the doctor each time they had an attack. We had to pull out the equipment to use on a monthly basis.

Even since I started them on the following essential oil blend as suggested by my friend, we used the nebuliser for just one cough and wheeze episode.

Recipe for preventing bronchitis

15mil amber glass bottle

20 drops of myrrh essential oil

20 drops of frankincense essential oil

Fill up the rest of the bottle with fractionated coconut oil

Replace the bottle lid with a pump head for your convenience.

I have been applying a pump of this blend on my toddlers’ chest and back every day for the last six months. The blend works well, and we have not visited the doctor for any cough treatment since then. See paragraphs below for more information on myrrh and frankincense.

What about that one cough and wheeze episode?

That cough and wheeze were triggered by dust accumulated on someone’s window curtain. They were playing peekaboo behind the curtains in the evening. Although I knew that the curtains are not washed for years, I was not determined enough to stop them from playing behind the curtains. Within 24 hours, they developed phlegm and cough.

Knowing that their cough was triggered by dust allergy, we applied tea tree oil to counter the allergy and our usual myrrh and frankincense blend. After two days of application, they were still wheezing audibly that I knew it was time to take out the nebuliser again.

Myrrh

According to Dr Axe, myrrh is one of the most commonly used essential oil since the biblical times. It is a resin derived from the myrrh tree, often found in Africa and the Middle East. Myrrh is also frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Myrhh oil has many potential benefits, including to reduce the proliferation of human cancer cells, antibacterial and antifungal to treat minor skin irritation. It is an excellent oil for maintaining healthy skin, and it relaxes the mind. Myrrh oil fights viral infections that cause bronchitis, and relieves congestions and reduces phlegm.

As myrrh boosts immunity and tones up the organs in the body, I include myrrh in the tummy blend that I make for myself too. I will share the oil blends I put together for myself another day.

Frankincense

I touched on frankincense in a previous post on how it has miraculously helped me ward off inflammation from blocked milk ducts.

As I have personally experienced the benefits of frankincense, I firmly believe that it is an effective and potent essential oil that we cannot do without. The only con is that frankincense is an expensive oil. I am constantly on the quest to find alternative oils that have the same effect but more accessible in terms of price.

Frankincense oil has several amazing benefits. Similar to myrrh, it boosts immunity given its antiseptic properties, and it fights cancer and promotes skin health. Research also suggests that frankincense oil fights depression and improves memory. Its anti-inflammation properties have not only helped me fight oncoming fever from blocked milk ducts. It also aids in managing my lower back pain arising from carrying babies all day long.

See Dr Axe’s post for a detailed explanation.

  1. Hi there! It’s been awhile since I commented. I too have used EOs to build immunity and ward off bronchial episodes in my child. My childhood asthma stopped at 12-13 thankfully. My number one has to be nebulised once too. I used Young Living’s Breathe Again & Thieves, as well as the oils you recommended, and agree yes those oils are expensive! With Breathe Again, I was just testing it out before applying on my son and it halted a small episode in me, was as good as popping a ventolin tablet when I feel that chest tightening sensation.

    1. Hi Sharon, thank you for sharing! We rely on Onguard ( doTERRA’s version of Thieves) heavily too. More for my son and myself as our asthma is typically triggered by cold air and the cinnamon in Onguard warms up our airway. 😊

I am so thankful that we have home remedy that works so that we don’t have to run to the clinic so often. But I always like to remind ppl that we need to treat asthma seriously. If the EOs and inhaler don’t work, next step is to see the doc and urgently!
