Once in a while, my 7 and 8-year olds will ask me how rain comes about. My eldest one who is very interested in natural disaster and weather, would also ask, “Mummy, why is there a thunderstorm?” I was pretty stumped most of the time because I felt inadequate in explaining the water cycle in simple terms that a 6-year old and 8-year old can understand.
I was delighted to find this treasure, “A Wild Ride on the Water Cycle” written by Anthony Yanez, a meteorologist for NBC4 Southern California. I remember studying the water cycle in school and I found the facts unrelatable.
Having five kids at home and telling them stories frequently has benefited the author in creating a fascinating storybook on the water cycle. He manages to bring science to life. The storyline is very enchanting, and my children learned a lot more on the water cycle which I thought is complicated and abstract to explain.
The picture book takes us on the journey of Jake and Alice, who are two water drops and were swallowed by a prehistoric dinosaur.
After the dinosaur died, the water droplets remained in the earth until they were absorbed up the tree trunks and subsequently evaporated into the sky. The water droplets live till present times and continuously transform into various forms such as ice and clouds, and even got entangled into a hurricane disaster.
