We moved into our new place in late November 2017. As we stay close to nature in a newly developed property, we found lots of mosquitoes lurking around the development.

We had to shut our windows at night to keep the insects at bay. Thus we turned on the air-conditioner every night, which is expensive and environmentally unfriendly. See my earlier post on how we try to safeguard ourselves from all the bugs.

Within a month of moving in, #4 was so badly bitten that she suffered days of high fever. Our paediatrician put her on standby for hospitalisation while she was tested for dengue fever. Fortunately, she was only allergic to insect bites and was tested negative for dengue.

That was the last straw for us. We decided to install the mosquito net to keep everyone safe once and for all.

Magic Seal Mosquito Net

The Magic Seal screen was developed in New Zealand by its parent company.

The frame of the screen consists of plastic strips with the mosquito net laminated between the strip and magnetic strips. Another set of the magnetic strip is attached to the four sides of the window frame so that the screen stays on the window frame and can be removed when required. The mosquito net is made of fibreglass strands, which according to its website, is vinyl coated, flexible and non-combustible which will not rust, rot, corrode, shrink, scratch or stain.

We have installed mosquito nets on all the windows in our apartment, as well as on the sliding doors.

There are many misconceptions about the installations of the mosquito nets. Based on our experience after using the nets for a couple of months, we are happy that we decided to proceed with the installation.

Our Verdict

Look and Feel

One of the considerations most people have is whether the mosquito net will darken the rooms and reduces wind flow.

In our experience, our rooms remain bright and airy even though wind flow has indeed reduced by about 20%.

As seen in the photo below, the mosquito net is unobtrusive. Sometimes, we forget it is there.

Convenience

These nets are not permanently attached to the window. You can pull out one corner of the net to access the window handle as and when needed. This is especially convenient for single windows.

In the case of the double window that opens out from the middle like ours, it becomes a little tricky because the mosquito net is much bigger. We need to handle it with care so that we do not break the magnetic strip or tear the mosquito net in the long run because we open and shut the windows every day.

We also install mosquito nets on our balcony doors. The supplier built an additional frame and tracks which works like another sliding door that runs parallel to our existing balcony sliding door. The mosquito net is attached to the frame. So for most of the time, we leave our balcony door open to allow airflow while keeping the mosquito net sliding door closed.

The Imperfections

However, the Magic Seal mosquito net is not perfect.

Too much of a good thing

First of all, the low invisibility of the net means that we are not aware of its existence at times. There were several occasions when I walked through the frame and tripped over the net, once carrying a baby with me.

This also means that the net is more easily subjected to accidental tear. The net is so thin and soft that I believe it can be easily slashed by using a pen-knife. With active children at home, I worry that they may accidentally damage the mosquito nets.

Further, it is not 100% bug-free. Tiny insects such as ants can enter the house.

Behaviours at home

You will also need to inculcate the habit of closing the sliding door after entering or leaving the house. There were occasions we had visitors who are understandably not used to closing the mosquito net door. So insects flew in. Having mosquito nets installed all around the house means that once insects enter, they have difficulty leaving too. So, we spent a couple of days trying to kill all the mosquitoes that flew in.

We have very young and curious children at home. The twins have recently developed an interest in the mosquito net and like to pull it open, making the installation half as useful. Nonetheless, I believe this is just temporary, and the twins will soon move on to play with other items at home, such as opening the cupboard doors…

  1. A job well done by Daniel and Kiong from Magicseal in installing the mosquito nets. They were friendly especially Daniel and efficient in doing their job. Thank you Magicseal 👏🏽

  2. Does the magnetic strip lose its stickiness and come off when you try to remove the screen? Thinking of getting it since spiders and lizards have been entering our house through the window gaps.

    1. I am into my 3rd year with the magnetic screen and we pull out the net every day to close the window. The magnetic strip does weaken slightly by now, but still holding on well. On days of super strong winds, it can get blown down.

  3. There are so many supplier out there. Cheaper options with good service (online comments) . Can’t make up my mind.

    1. Oh yes! We are spoilt for choice indeed. My 2-yr old magic seal installation is still working well other than a tear on the one attached to the sliding door due to the kids’ rough handling.

    1. Hi, I have heard of other cheaper DIY options. 😊 I suggest u ask them for a quote. They will come your place and take measurement before giving u a quote.

  4. Hi may i know how do you clean the magicseal insect screen? Is it okie to use tissue or wet wipes to clean it? Afraid that the vinyl coated will be removed. Thanks?
